About the Album
“UY Scuti” is the eleventh studio album by Nigerian rapper and singer Olamide, released in June 2021 through YBNL Nation and EMPIRE. The 10-track project runs for about 28 minutes and captures another stage in Olamide’s musical evolution, moving further away from the hard-edged street rap of his earlier work toward a smoother, more melodic sound.
The album features Jaywillz, Layydoe, FAVE and Phyno, with songs including “Need For Speed,” “Jailer,” “Rock,” “Julie,” “Rough Up,” “Want,” “PonPon,” “Cup of Tea,” “Somebody” and “So Much More.”
The Sound
UY Scuti blends Afrobeats, R&B, pop, reggae and dancehall influences, built around mostly relaxed and mid-tempo production. Olamide’s delivery is noticeably softer and more melodic, allowing him to explore romantic themes and personal reflections without abandoning the confidence associated with his earlier music.
Producer Eskeez played a major role in shaping the project’s sound, contributing production across the album. The result is a cohesive collection of atmospheric instrumentals, understated percussion and melodic arrangements. Tracks such as “Rock” and “Julie” lean into romance, while “Jailer” and “Rough Up” bring stronger dancehall and Afropop influences.
What the Album Is About
Love, desire and personal reflection are central to UY Scuti. Olamide spends much of the project exploring relationships, attraction and the experience of enjoying life from the perspective of someone who has already travelled through difficult circumstances.
“Need For Speed” connects his present success with memories of growing up in Lagos and the ambition that pushed him forward. On “Rock,” “Want” and “PonPon,” he takes a more romantic approach, while “Somebody” brings Phyno into the album for another perspective on love and attraction.
The album’s title also has a personal meaning for Olamide. He explained that the name came from his son asking about the biggest star in the universe. The idea stayed with him and became a fitting title for a project he described as representing a new direction in his career.
UY Scuti therefore presents Olamide in a more relaxed and exploratory mode, combining his experience as a street-rooted rapper with a growing interest in global pop sounds, romance and melodic songwriting.
