Olamide – Carpe Diem

About the Album

“Carpe Diem” is an album by Nigerian rapper and singer Olamide, released on October 8, 2020 through YBNL Nation and EMPIRE. The 12-track project runs for about 38 minutes and marked an important shift in the sound Olamide was developing at the time. Rather than leaning heavily on the raw street-rap approach associated with some of his earlier work, the album places greater emphasis on melody, Afropop and contemporary Nigerian sounds.

The project features Omah Lay, Fireboy DML, Peruzzi, Bad Boy Timz, Bella Shmurda and Phyno, bringing together established voices and emerging artists from Nigeria’s evolving Afrobeats scene. Production is led largely by P.Priime, with additional contributions from producers including Pheelz, Young Jonn, Vstix and ID Cabasa.

The Sound

Carpe Diem explores a more melodic side of Olamide. Afrobeats and Afropop form the foundation, while elements of dancehall, hip-hop and contemporary street-pop appear across the tracklist. The production generally favours smooth rhythms and memorable melodies, giving Olamide room to alternate between singing, rap and conversational delivery.

Songs such as “Infinity” with Omah Lay and “Loading” with Bad Boy Timz capture the album’s accessible, melody-driven direction, while “Triumphant” featuring Bella Shmurda connects Olamide’s established perspective with the energy of a younger generation of Nigerian street-pop artists.

What the Album Is About

The title “Carpe Diem” comes from a Latin expression commonly translated as “seize the day.” That idea runs through the project as Olamide reflects on success, ambition, relationships, enjoyment and the experiences that shaped his journey.

There is also a more personal side to the album. On records such as “Triumphant,” Olamide reflects on his rise from a difficult background and the experiences that came with achieving success. Other songs move into romance, attraction and nightlife, creating a balance between personal reflection and entertainment.

The album also captures a period of transition in Olamide’s career. The Native noted that the project demonstrated his willingness to adapt to changing Nigerian music trends while still retaining elements of the identity that had established him as one of the country’s prominent artists.

Carpe Diem therefore sits at an interesting point in Olamide’s catalogue, connecting his street-oriented past with the more melodic direction that became increasingly visible in his subsequent releases.
