Fido – Awolowo

About the Song

“Awolowo” is the breakthrough debut single from Fido, released in August 2024 through Heatwave Records. Produced by Iyke Elvis, the song introduced Fido with a distinctive sound that combines contemporary Afrobeats with elements of Afrofusion and a raw, street-level perspective. The record quickly drew attention for its unusual subject matter, memorable hook and Fido’s expressive vocal style.

The Sound

“Awolowo” has a laid-back but hypnotic groove that gives Fido enough space to tell his story in his own way. His delivery moves between melodic singing, conversational phrasing and Yoruba-infused expressions, creating a sound that feels spontaneous rather than heavily polished.

The production by Iyke Elvis is central to the song’s character. A prominent bass-driven rhythm provides the foundation while the relatively short arrangement keeps the focus on Fido’s voice and the repeated refrain. The result is an Afrofusion record that feels both unconventional and immediately catchy.

What the Song Is About

“Awolowo” explores escape, pressure, spirituality and personal freedom. Fido presents a period in his life when he was dealing with uncertainty and looking for a way to temporarily distance himself from the pressures around him. He has explained that he recorded the song during a difficult period when he had little money and was unsure about what would come next.

The song also deals with the feeling of being misunderstood. Fido acknowledges that people may judge his choices or interpret his behaviour differently, but he maintains a strong sense of individuality and chooses to follow his own path.

Despite its relaxed and unconventional presentation, there is a spiritual layer running through the record. References to God and divine guidance sit alongside the song’s themes of escape, giving “Awolowo” a more personal dimension than its carefree surface might suggest. Fido has also described the song as spiritual and said its inspiration came to him naturally while working with Iyke Elvis in the studio.

The title should not be read simply as a political or historical tribute to Obafemi Awolowo. Fido has connected it to Awolowo Road in Ikoyi, while also noting that the name fits his own surname, Awosika.
