Asake ft Central Cee – Wave

About the Song

“Wave” is a high-energy collaboration between Nigerian Afrobeats star Asake and British rapper Central Cee. Released on June 21, 2024 through YBNL Nation and EMPIRE, the song served as the lead single from Asake’s third studio album, Lungu Boy. It was produced by Magicsticks, one of Asake’s most important creative collaborators.

The collaboration connects two artists with very different musical backgrounds but a shared emphasis on rhythm, confidence and street-inspired storytelling. It also arrived ahead of Asake’s Lungu Boy World Tour, helping establish the energetic direction of the album.

The Sound

“Wave” combines Afrobeats, Afro-fusion and elements of UK rap, with Magicsticks creating a rhythm-heavy production that gives both artists room to maintain their individual identities. Asake’s delivery moves naturally between Yoruba, Nigerian Pidgin and English, while Central Cee brings his distinct British rap cadence to the record.

The production is driven by percussion and a steady groove rather than an overly dense arrangement. Asake’s melodic passages provide the Nigerian foundation, while Central Cee’s verse introduces a sharper rap texture. The contrast makes the record feel like a genuine meeting of Nigerian and British contemporary music rather than a simple guest appearance.

The track’s confident energy also makes it naturally suited to parties, cars, workouts and other settings where a strong rhythmic record fits the mood.

What the Song Is About

At the centre of “Wave” is confidence, independence and the decision to keep moving without allowing outside opinions to interfere. Asake presents himself as someone focused on his own path, success and enjoyment rather than being distracted by unnecessary conversations.

The song also carries a strong theme of progress and resilience. Both artists reference their journeys, the challenges they have faced and the lifestyles they now enjoy. Their success is presented as something connected to persistence and staying committed to their individual identities.

The collaboration is particularly interesting because the two artists approach that confidence from different perspectives. Asake brings the language, rhythm and cultural references of contemporary Nigerian music, while Central Cee adds the perspective of a UK rapper whose style is rooted in London’s street culture.

Asake has explained that he originally recorded his chorus during a session with Magicsticks in Lagos, with the idea of focusing on positive things rather than getting caught up in side conversations. After meeting Central Cee in New York, the two connected in the studio and developed the collaboration that became “Wave.”

The song went on to reach No. 41 on the UK Official Singles Chart and became a notable crossover record between Nigerian Afrobeats and UK rap.
