About the Song
“Agbani Darego” is a 2020 Afropop record by Nigerian artist Lil Kesh, released on November 19, 2020 as the second track on his Ecstasy EP. The song was produced by Princeton Beatz and showcases a softer, more melodic side of Lil Kesh compared with the harder rap energy of the EP’s opening track, “YAGI Level.”
The title uses the name of Agbani Darego, the Nigerian model and former Miss World, as a reference point for beauty and elegance. Calling a woman “Agbani Darego” therefore becomes Lil Kesh’s way of describing her as exceptionally attractive.
The Sound
“Agbani Darego” moves into a smooth Afropop and Afrosounds direction, built around a catchy vocal refrain and a dance-friendly rhythm. Princeton Beatz’s production gives Lil Kesh enough space to combine melody with his familiar conversational delivery.
The record carries a playful and flirtatious atmosphere, with Lil Kesh focusing on attraction and the physical appeal of the woman at the centre of the song. Its rhythmic quality makes it easy to place alongside the more relaxed and romantic records on Ecstasy.
What the Song Is About
The central theme of “Agbani Darego” is attraction and admiration. Lil Kesh uses the name as a metaphor for exceptional beauty, turning a well-known Nigerian cultural reference into the foundation of a playful love song.
The lyrics focus heavily on physical attraction, dancing and the excitement of being drawn to someone. The song is less concerned with complicated storytelling and more interested in creating an enjoyable atmosphere around romantic chemistry.
“Agbani Darego” also provides an important change of pace within Ecstasy. The EP opens with Lil Kesh demonstrating his rap ability on “YAGI Level,” before this second track moves into a more melodic and romantic space. Pulse’s review similarly identified the song as a softer Afropop moment following the opening rap record.
