Victor AD – RED EYE (The EP)

About the EP

“RED EYE” is the debut EP by Nigerian singer and songwriter Victor AD, released on August 2, 2019 through SJW Entertainment. The seven-track project runs for approximately 22 minutes and features no guest artists, allowing Victor AD to carry the entire project with his own vocals, songwriting and perspective.

The tracklist includes “Left Pocket,” “Vanessa,” “Kowo Wole,” “Fact,” “Doh,” “Red Eye” and “Kpokpo Didi.” The project arrived after the success of Victor AD’s “Wetin We Gain” and “Tire You,” establishing a more complete picture of the artist beyond his earlier singles.

The Sound

RED EYE works within Afrobeats, Afropop and Afro-fusion, combining melodic songwriting with relaxed grooves and reflective storytelling. The production generally leaves room for Victor AD’s voice and lyrics to carry the songs, giving the EP a personal rather than heavily performance-driven character.

The project moves between different moods. “Left Pocket” and “Fact” lean into ambition and the pursuit of progress, while “Vanessa” and “Kpokpo Didi” explore attraction and relationships. “Kowo Wole” brings a more energetic feel, while the title track turns inward and focuses on personal experiences and the struggles behind Victor AD’s journey.

What the EP Is About

A major thread running through RED EYE is the contrast between struggle and aspiration. Victor AD uses the project to discuss emotional scars, relationships, financial ambitions and the experiences that shaped him.

The artist described the EP as being made for people who have faced difficult circumstances, particularly young people coming from disadvantaged backgrounds. Contemporary coverage of the project also described it as introspective, with Victor AD reflecting on his love life, personal struggles and emotional state.

That personal quality gives the project its identity. The songs do not stay within one subject, but repeatedly return to ideas of survival, self-improvement, love, money and the desire to build a better life. “Red Eye,” the sixth track, is particularly connected to the challenges Victor AD experienced before finding greater recognition in music.

The closing track, “Kpokpo Didi,” shifts toward romance, giving the EP a softer ending after several songs centred on struggle and ambition.
