About the Album
“Rema Compilation” is a 10-track compilation project by Nigerian singer Rema, released on July 9, 2020 through Mavin Records and Jonzing World. Running for approximately 32 minutes, the project brings together key records from the early stage of Rema’s career, creating a collection that captures the sound and identity that surrounded his breakthrough period.
The project includes songs originally associated with Rema’s self-titled EP, Freestyle and Bad Commando, making it a useful snapshot of his musical development before his first studio album, Rave & Roses.
The Sound
The compilation moves across Afrobeats, Afropop and trap-influenced sounds, with Rema’s melodic delivery connecting the different records. The production credits include several producers who played important roles in shaping his early sound, including Ozedikus, Altims, Rvssian, DeeVee, Level and The Elements.
The tracklist opens with “Iron Man”, followed by “Beamer (Bad Boys)” featuring Rvssian, “Corny,” “Dumebi,” “Why,” “Lady,” “Alien,” “Woman,” “American Love” and “Ginger Me.”
Songs such as “Dumebi” and “Iron Man” highlight Rema’s youthful Afrobeats sound, while “Why” and “Alien” introduce darker and more emotionally driven elements. “Woman” and “Ginger Me” lean toward romance and melodic Afropop.
What the Album Is About
Rather than presenting one continuous storyline, Rema Compilation works as a collection of different sides of Rema’s early artistry. The songs explore attraction, romance, confidence, youthful energy and emotional experiences, while also showing his willingness to move between different production styles.
The project is particularly notable because it documents the period when Rema was establishing the sound that would become central to his career. “Dumebi”, one of his best-known early records, sits alongside more experimental songs such as “Alien” and the romantic “Woman,” giving the compilation a broad picture of his early musical identity.
