About the Song
“Gberatan” is a 2022 single by Nigerian street-pop artist Portable, released on March 1, 2022 through Zeh Nation. Running for almost four minutes, the track captures Portable’s energetic approach to street music, combining Yoruba expressions, Nigerian Pidgin and his distinctive vocal delivery.
The song arrived during a period when Portable was building a strong presence in Nigeria’s street-pop scene. Following the attention generated by his breakout records, “Gberatan” continues the raw, outspoken style that became closely associated with his early catalogue.
The Sound
“Gberatan” is built around a lively Afrosounds foundation with the kind of repetitive vocal phrases and rhythmic delivery that make Portable’s music immediately recognisable. His performance moves between singing, chanting and conversational street-rap, giving the record a spontaneous quality.
Rather than relying on a complex vocal arrangement, the song draws much of its character from Portable’s personality and the momentum of the beat. The result is an energetic street record that fits naturally into playlists focused on Nigerian Afrobeats, street-pop and contemporary Fuji-influenced sounds.
What the Song Is About
The song carries themes of confidence, street identity, money and the determination to maintain one’s position despite opposition. Portable presents himself with the boldness and self-assurance that frequently appear throughout his music, while references to enemies and personal struggles add a tougher edge to the record.
There is also a strong element of self-expression. Portable uses Yoruba and Nigerian street slang to communicate in a way that feels direct and familiar to his audience. His approach gives “Gberatan” the character of a record made for people who connect with the realities, humour and competitive spirit of street culture.
