About the EP
“Ayra Starr” is the self-titled debut EP by Nigerian singer and songwriter Ayra Starr, released on January 22, 2021 through Mavin Records. The five-track project runs for about 13 minutes and introduced listeners to the young artist’s distinctive blend of Afropop, R&B, soul and alternative influences.
The EP features “Away,” “Ija,” “DITR,” “Sare” and “Memories.” There are no guest features, allowing Ayra Starr’s voice and songwriting to remain the focus throughout the project.
The Sound
The project combines contemporary Afropop with soulful melodies, R&B textures and subtle alternative influences. Ayra Starr’s vocal style is central to the EP, moving between soft melodic passages and more expressive performances while maintaining a youthful but assured character.
Production comes from contributors including Louddaaa, Dayogrey and Don Jazzy. “Sare” also incorporates a sample from the Lijadu Sisters’ “Orere Elejigbo,” connecting the modern production to an older Nigerian musical tradition.
“Away” introduces the EP with a rhythmic and emotionally charged approach, while “Ija” and “Memories” explore love, relationships and nostalgia. “DITR” and “Sare” move into more personal territory, giving the project a wider emotional range.
What the EP Is About
The project captures several sides of young adulthood, including love, heartbreak, vulnerability, confidence, teenage anxiety and personal experiences. Ayra Starr’s songwriting often turns private emotions into direct and relatable observations.
“Away” was particularly personal for the singer. She explained that she wrote much of the song while feeling down and used the writing process almost like therapy. “Sare,” meanwhile, was created with a more joyful intention, with Ayra wanting listeners to feel beautiful and experience the warmth of love.
“Memories” closes the EP on a nostalgic note. Ayra described the song as an invitation to create memorable experiences with friends, giving the project a lighter ending after some of its more vulnerable moments.
As her introduction to Mavin Records, “Ayra Starr” established the foundation for the sound and personality she would develop further on 19 & Dangerous later that same year.
