Bella Shmurda – High Tension EP

About the EP

“High Tension” is the debut EP by Nigerian singer and songwriter Bella Shmurda, released on January 27, 2020. The seven-track project arrived after the growing attention around his breakout record “Vision 2020” and established the raw, street-focused sound that would become an important part of his identity.

The project features Olamide on the “Vision 2020” remix, bringing together two artists whose music is strongly connected to Nigerian street culture. Other tracks on the EP include “Ginger Me,” “Omnipotent,” “Liquor,” “Sho Mo Mi,” “Amope” and “Upgrade.”

The Sound

High Tension combines Afrobeats, street-pop and Nigerian hip-hop influences, with Bella Shmurda relying heavily on melodic street storytelling and an expressive vocal style. The production credits include ID Cabasa, AjeOnDMix and other contributors who helped shape the project’s energetic but grounded sound.

Bella’s delivery is one of the EP’s defining characteristics. He moves comfortably between singing, rhythmic phrasing and conversational lines, often using Yoruba and Nigerian Pidgin to make his experiences feel direct and relatable.

The production does not attempt to hide the rough edges of his storytelling. Instead, the beats provide a rhythmic backdrop for Bella to discuss his ambitions, relationships, money and the pressures surrounding life as a young person trying to make progress.

What the EP Is About

A major theme across “High Tension” is the pursuit of a better life. Bella Shmurda’s early music was closely connected to his experiences navigating the streets of Lagos, and the EP carries that perspective into stories about struggle, money, relationships and determination.

“Vision 2020” is particularly important to the project’s identity. The song chronicles the desire to escape difficult circumstances and build a different future, while the remix with Olamide gives the record an additional layer of Nigerian street-rap energy. Bella’s rise was closely associated with this song before the release of the EP.

Other songs explore different sides of his personality. “Omnipotent” and “Upgrade” carry an ambitious tone, while “Liquor” and “Sho Mo Mi” introduce more carefree and lifestyle-oriented moments. “Amope” adds another personal dimension, helping the project avoid sounding like a collection focused on struggle alone.

The result is a compact introduction to Bella Shmurda’s early artistic identity. High Tension captures an emerging artist using street-pop as a way to document his environment, express ambition and connect his personal experiences with a wider audience.
