The 2023 Guild of Music Supervisors Awards, scheduled for Sunday, March 5, at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles, will present Paul Williams with the Icon Award. Pilar McCurry, who worked at Sony Pictures Entertainment as a senior vice president and music supervisor, will be given the Legacy Award after she dies.
Paul Williams and Pilar McCurry will be honored at the Guild of Music Supervisors’ 13th Annual Awards, according to vice president Madonna Wade-Reed. Both have made significant contributions to the entertainment industry through their songs and management.
Williams stated that when the ideal song placement transforms both the scene and the song, “there is a strange, beautiful alchemy that occurs. Throughout my career, I have had numerous opportunities to write music for films, and each time feels like magic. We appreciate the Guild of Music Supervisors’ extraordinary recognition.
Williams and Barbra Streisand co-wrote “Evergreen (Love Theme from A Star Is Born),” which won an Oscar in 1977 for best original song. He has been nominated for two Primetime Emmys and has won three Grammy Awards. In addition to receiving the Johnny Mercer Award last year, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2001. Williams serves as ASCAP’s president and board chairman.
Joshua Radin, a singer-songwriter, will perform as a tribute to Williams. The Icon Award has previously gone to Diane Warren, Quincy Jones, Burt Bacharach, Kenny Loggins, and Marc Shaiman, among others.
A music supervisor who has had an impact on the industry is given the Legacy Award. Former winners include Chris Montan, Joel Sill, Gary Lemel, Bob Hunka, Maureen Crowe, Mitchell Leib, and Bob Hunka.
McCurry, a music supervisor for movies like Love Jones, Stomp the Yard, Set It Off, Gridlock’d, and Men in Black, passed away in March 2018 at the age of 53. She oversaw the music for more than 20 films while working at Sony, where she managed more than 50 projects. This slate also included You Got Served, Takers, The Gospel, Lakeview Terrace, This Christmas, The Karate Kid, Pursuit of Happyness, and Hitch in addition to the previously mentioned Stomp the Yard.
From 1999 to 2001, McCurry worked for Will Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment as vice president of soundtracks and motion picture music before joining Sony. McCurry collaborated with a variety of artists over the course of her nearly 25-year career, including Beyoncé, Chris Brown, Questlove, Aaliyah, Enrique Iglesias, Lauryn Hill, 2Pac, and En Vogue.
Gaby Moreno and Ruth B., both nominees for the Guild of Music Supervisors Award, will perform at this year’s event. Moreno will sing “A Song In My Heart” from The Valet, and Ruth B. will sing “Paper Airplanes” from Jazzman’s Blues.
