Timi Dakolo, a Nigerian singer, and Bright Goya, also known as Goya Menor, a street hop singer, will both perform at a carnival held in New York to commemorate Nigeria’s 62nd anniversary.
The Organization for the Advancement of Nigeria (OAN) and the Nigerian Consulate General in New York work together to put on the carnival.
Amb. Lot Egopija, the Nigerian consul general in New York, discussed the events and said they would begin with a parade on Saturday where Nigerian associations would showcase various Nigerian cultures, foods, and fashions.
According to Egopija, there would be a carnival following the parade where various Nigerian musicians and artists would perform.
“By booking some Nigerian artists to perform, we are bringing the carnival a little bit further than it once was, and we must thank our sponsors for their support.
“I must praise the governor of Bayelsa State, Douye Diri, for having faith in us and sponsoring a Nigerian musician, Timi Dakolo, to perform for our citizens.
“OAN is sponsoring Goya Menor, and we’ve also invited Temilayo Abodunrin, a young and talented 12-year-old saxophonist, to take part in our Independence Day carnival for the first time.
The fact that many of the registered associations will participate through cultural exhibition and through their costumes, which will highlight the diversity in our culture, “we are particularly thrilled by,” the man said.
He claims that the exhibition is only open to Nigerians in order to showcase the country’s rich cultural heritage to the outside world. He expects that visitors from other countries will visit in order to experience Nigerian culture.
However, Egopija asserted that after 62 years of independence, Nigerians had remained unified and had been contributing to the development of their nation.
“Well, the fact that we’re still one and working together shows that we’re a nation that is strong and that we’re making progress in upholding the ideals of our founding fathers.
“Showcasing who we are as a people is one of the things we have been doing as a Consulate in this regard, and when we do it, we do it with the cooperative efforts of all the registered associations.
Therefore, it should go without saying that if we, as a subset, are acting in a way that demonstrates unity, it also demonstrates that the country is working to ensure that the whole is, and we are working towards that, he said. (NAN)
