About the EP
“The Second Wave” is the second EP by Nigerian singer Ruger, released on November 26, 2021 through Jonzing World and Sony Music Entertainment UK. The four-track project runs for about 14 minutes and follows his earlier PANDEMIC EP released in March of the same year.
The project contains “Champion,” “Useless,” “Snapchat,” and “Dior,” with production across the EP handled by Kukbeatz. There are no guest features on the original four-track edition, allowing Ruger’s distinctive vocals and songwriting to remain at the centre of the project.
The Sound
The Second Wave continues Ruger’s emerging Afro-dancehall and Afrobeats identity while giving him room to explore romantic, confident and introspective ideas. The production is driven by rhythmic percussion, melodic hooks and atmospheric arrangements that complement Ruger’s expressive vocal delivery.
The short runtime gives the EP a focused feel. “Champion” introduces Ruger’s self-assured side, while “Useless” and “Snapchat” explore relationships, attraction and personal experiences. “Dior” closes the original project with one of its most recognisable moments, built around a smooth groove and Ruger’s characteristic melodic phrasing.
What the EP Is About
Ruger’s writing on The Second Wave moves between confidence, ambition, romance, attraction and the complications of relationships. The project captures an artist becoming more comfortable with his identity and using his music to express both his aspirations and personal experiences.
The title reflects the sense of progression surrounding Ruger’s early career. After introducing himself with PANDEMIC, he returned with a more concentrated project that further established the musical character that would become closely associated with him.
The EP was produced entirely by Kukbeatz, who Ruger publicly credited as an important creative collaborator on the project. That consistency gives the four songs a connected sonic identity while allowing each track to approach a different mood.
The original EP was later expanded with a three-track deluxe edition in June 2022, adding “Girlfriend,” “WeWe” and “Warning.”
